Chief of Police Jeff Laughlin

On April 1st, 2024, Jeff Laughlin was sworn in as the new Chief of Police for the Southmayd Police Department.  Chief Laughlin has been married to his wife Christa since 1998 and are blessed with 3 sons, one is a Police Officer, one is a director for a company providing support for people with special needs throughout Texas and one is still in High School working towards a successful career.

Chief Laughlin began his law enforcement career in 2004 with the Denton Police Department where he worked in several divisions including, Police Officer, Narcotics Detective, Fugitive Apprehension Detective, Criminal Investigative Detective, Auto Theft Detective, SWAT Team member, Sniper, Police Training Officer, Firearms Instructor, TCOLE Instructor and holds a Master Peace Officers License.  He was also a credentialed U.S. Marshal Task Force Officer and a team leader for the Joint East Texas U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force.

Prior to his law enforcement career, Chief Laughlin proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1996-2005 acquiring the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6).  While in the Marines he served as an Infantry Marine, then Infantry Platoon Sergeant and Platoon Commander supervising over 40 Marines.  He finished out his career in the Marines as a Recruiter where he was responsible for the enlistment of 91 highly qualified new applicants into the U.S. Marine Corps.

Chief Laughlin believes there is a difference between being a supervisor and a leader.  He believes in positive motivation and servant leadership and wants to make a difference in the community and his country by continuing to lead by example.

Chief Laughlin brings with him a vast amount of experience that will only help in making the community of Southmayd a very safe and successful place to live.

Lieutenant Michael Aguirre

Lieutenant Michael Aguirre is a great example for the community of Southmayd and prides himself on Professionalism, Positivity, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence. He truly cares about the City of Southmayd and the Police Department he serves! We are proud to have him as the second in command of the Southmayd Police Department.

Lt. Aguirre is a graduate of the Texoma Regional Police Academy. Lt Aguirre started a career in law enforcement on December 12th, 2011, as a reserve police officer for the City of Collinsville. Throughout his tenure at the Collinsville Police Department, Aguirre has garnered experience in various fields of law enforcement including criminal investigations, drug enforcement and community policing. In this time, he discovered a passion to serve.

With over twenty-three hundred hours of training, Aguirre has obtained an advanced peace officer license through the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement and through continued education he was rewarded with a certificate in criminal justice while attending Grayson County College.

In February of 2021, Aguirre began his tenure with the Southmayd Police Department, Aguirre was selected as the field training officer. Beyond his primary assignments, Aguirre was a founding member of the newly established stand-alone police department with the highest priority for the quality of life for the citizens he serves.

Officer Scott Barrett

Officer Scott Barrett is a dedicated law enforcement professional with deep roots in Southmayd, Texas. A proud graduate of S&S High School's class of 2000, he brings a strong sense of community and commitment to his role in serving and protecting his hometown.

Officer Barrett's journey has led him back to Southmayd, where he is thrilled for the opportunity to contribute to the safety and well-being of the community he grew up in. With a passion for public service and hometown pride, Officer Barrett embodies the values of integrity, compassion, and dedication in his law enforcement career.

Officer Barrett is a dedicated family man and seasoned law enforcement professional with over 20 years of law enforcement experience. Married and a proud father, Officer Barrett has exemplified commitment both at home and in his career as a police officer. Throughout his two decades in law enforcement, Officer Barrett has distinguished himself with a Master Peace Officer certification and a track record of leadership. He has served in pivotal roles including Sergeant and Chief of Police, where he demonstrated strong leadership and strategic oversight.

Officer Barrett is also recognized as a certified Field Training Officer and has acquired numerous certifications in leadership, supervision, and school-based law enforcement. His passion for community engagement is evident as he looks forward to fostering strong relationships with the citizens of Southmayd.

Officer Craig Williams

Officer Craig Williams Graduated from Whitesboro High School in 1984.  He has been married to his wife Christa since 2022 and has 5 children.  Officer Williams attended Arkansas Tech and Grayson College.  Officer Williams graduated from the Texoma Regional Police Academy in 1987 and has been serving as a Police Officer for over 33 years with Sherman Police Department, Pottsboro Police Department and most recently the Southmayd Police Department since 2016.

Officer Craig Williams has a Masters Peace Officers License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.  Officer Williams serves his community in many capacities including as an ordained Minister, music and youth minister, teacher, youth baseball-board member, commissioner and coach.  Officer Williams enjoys music (especially live music), collecting police department patches and going on cruises.  

Officer Ryan Dobbs

Officer Ryan Dobbs joined the Southmayd Police Department in 2022 as a Reserve Officer. Officer Dobbs brought 3 years of full-time policing experience from a midsize city in Tarrant County as well as 3 years’ experience as a correctional officer for the State of Texas.  Officer Dobbs has also been a volunteer firefighter with the Southmayd Fire Department since 2020.

Officer Dobbs has earned an associate’s degree from Grayson College and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Officer Dobbs specializes in traffic enforcement with an emphasis on apprehending intoxicated drivers. Day or night, Officer Dobbs is always looking to protect the motorists on our roads from becoming a victim of a drunk driving crash. Officer Dobbs works full-time as an airline pilot but always volunteers several days a month to serve the citizens and visitors of Southmayd. 

Officer Vaughn

Officer Vaughn started his career in law enforcement in 2012.  Officer Vaughn has been with the Southmayd Police Department since 2023 and has an Advanced Peace Officers License with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.  Officer Vaughn specializes in media design and drone operations for the department.

Officer Tyler Shipman

Officer Tyler Shipman graduated high school in 2017, after high school Tyler Shipman joined the United States Marine Corps and became a satellite communications operator. In 2021, after serving his country, Shipman exited the Marine Corps at the rank of Corporal with an honorable discharge and moved back to Texas to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Tyler Shipman has been serving as a volunteer firefighter in Tom Bean, Texas while also serving for the Grayson County Sheriff's Office as a detention Officer since 2022. With a dedication to serve, Shipman has always wanted to become a Police Officer to help others and has recently graduated the Texoma Regional Police Academy in December of 2023. With over 4 years of law enforcement experience, Officer Shipman wishes to excel with the City of Southmayd as a Police Officer with excellence, and professionalism for the community.
